Wool: But Knot As You Know It...

When thinking about wool, what is the first thing that pops into your head? It’s most likely how it’s used in the fashion industry. Is it a sweater, a cardigan and other warm and comfortable clothes? Or maybe you’re thinking of some decorative items you have in your house, things like blankets and cushion covers.

But what you may not know is that there is a much wider range of possibilities for wool, especially in your interior design projects. In this article, we will focus on one important and perhaps surprising characteristic of wool: its sound absorbing properties. We will show you how to utilise this feature while creating colourful, comfortable and visually appealing spaces. Get ready to be inspired!

Wool! Natural, Sustainable, and incredibly Versatile

Right from its organic origins, wool is an excellent material to consider for your design projects. It is a natural material, often locally sourced, hypoallergenic, mould resistant, durable and easily recyclable.

But perhaps more interesting, is that natural wool and wool-felt materials are extremely effective when it comes to acoustic absorption. There are a number of companies that are fully dedicated to developing these “quiet” materials, often combining the textile manufacturing process with the use of local resources for a more sustainable practice.

Wool! make sound absorption a style choice

There is a large range of sound-absorbing products made using wool that can be customised with different colours, textures and shapes. Sound absorption can be more than just a noise solution, it can also give your space a unique style while enhancing privacy and reducing stress levels. The dampening of additional noise can in fact generate a more friendly and peaceful atmosphere.

One very versatile and highly adaptable example are wool panels. They have many uses and can be adapted in terms of shape, dimensions and thickness. They can be placed on walls, ceilings or even as a space divider which combines their decorative characteristics with a more functional purpose. There are endless creative ways in which panels can be designed and some manufacturers will also offer the option to apply special finishings making them waterproof or fire-retardant, resulting in a safe and easy to clean material.

It is all these exceptional qualities that makes wool a wonderful product for both high or low budget projects ranging from restaurants to theatres, hotels and corporate offices.

Cosy, Quiet and Super Stylish. Wool! An Interior Design Delight

Wool is also an excellent product to apply to a residential project. In a living room the use of wool as an acoustic material can enhance a cosy atmosphere and promote a relaxing feeling, while in a kids room it can help in creating a quiet environment to study. The high number of options available in the market will give you plenty of ideas to add fun textures and colours to any of these spaces.

See the images below and hopefully they will inspire you to use wool products in your next project!
